Early Tournaisian Brachiopod Fauna in Jinbo Area, Hainan Island

Abstract

The very abundant brachiopods including Spirifer cf., subgrandis Rotai, Neospirifer sp., Fusella cf., tornacensis (Koninck), Punctospirifer sp., Mucrospirifer sp., Eumetria cf., serpentina (Koninck), palaeochoristites sp., Megachonetes sp., Plichonetes sp., Orthotetes sp., Chonetipustula sp., Marginatia sp., Curithyris sp., and Rhipidomella sp. were found for the first time at the Jinbo area, the northwest part of Hainan Island. That fauna indicates an Early Tournaisian in age. Accordingly, the fossil-bearing rocks, the Member 4 of former Nanhao Formation is now placed into the Aikuanian Stage. That fauna characterized by the flourishing of spiriferoid and the sparseness of productoids quite differs from the coeval brachiopod faunas of South China.
