Abstract

On the basis of conodonts Siphonodella levis and Polygnathus cf.inornatus, the middle-upper part of Member 2,Nanhao Formation,Jinbolaocun Village,Baisha County, northwest of Hainan island is now placed into Early Carboniferous, and may be correlated with the lower part of Cystophrentis-Pseudouralinia Interval zone of South China. The fairly well—preserved pygidiums and cephalons of trilobites including Australosutura sp.,Conophillipsia sp.,Hunanoproetus sp.,Linguaphillisia sp.,Weberiphillipsia cf.linguiformis Yuan Li,and W.sp.occurred together with those conodonts. That Lower Carboniferous trilobite fauna is known for the first time on Hainan Island, and is very similar to the Tournasian trilobites occurred in Rangari Limestone, the member of Tulcumba Sandstone,New South Wales,Australia. They may belong to the same palaeobiogeographic province.
