Abstract

Objective To study MRI and clinical features of empty sella syndrome. Methods 414 cases with empty sella syndrome from July 2005 to July 2010 in the hospital were selected as the subjects, whose MRI features and clinical data were filed and analyzed. Results MRI showed enlarged sella turcica, flattened pituitary and prolonged, postpositioned stalk hypophysial. The detection rate of empty sella syndrome by MRI was 4.10% in the subjects,of which, the rate for the male was 3.22% and for the female was 5.26%.The female was more vulnerable to empty sella syndrome than the male, and there was statistical difference between them with P0.05.The detection rate increased greatly when the persons werr beyond 30 years old,and to the maximum in the ones from 70 to 79 years old. Conclusion Empty sella syndrome has MRI features, and the detection rate by MRI relates to the age and gender significantly.
