Abstract
Arrayed waveguide grating(AWG) is a good device for the construction of multiple channels dense wavelength division multiplexing(DWDM)optical network and the insertion loss is one of its important characteristic parameters.Based on the introduction of some solutions to improve the insertion loss of AWG we analyze how to use the tapered waveguides to reduce the coupling loss caused by the field mismatch. The proposed method can considerably low the insertion loss of AWG without increasing difficulties of device processing. The design criteria can be easily applied to AWG of various materials and structures.
