Abstract
Arrayed waveguide grating(AWG) is an important device for DWDM optical network. The insertion loss is one of its important characteristic parameters. Based on the generalization of many solutions to improve this characteristic parameter we analyze how to use the tapered waveguides to reduce the coupling loss caused by the field mismatch. The proposed method can considerably lower the insertion loss of AWG without increasing difficulties of device processing. The design criteria can be easily applied to AWG of various materials and structures.
