Abstract

Objective:To investigate the effects of activation of astrocytes on brain damages after chronic cerebral hypoperfusion.[WT5HZ]Methods:Both common carotid arteries were ligated bilaterally in 70 Wistar rats.Twelve of them were filled cyclosporin A.Astrocytes were observed with immunohistochemistry for GFAP.Activation of astrocytes and brain damages were then investigated from 1 to 4 months after the ligation.[WT5HZ]Results:There were obvious proliferation and hypertrophy of astrocytes in cortex, hippocampus and white matter after chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. From 1 to 4 months, proliferation and hypertrophy of astrocytes were continued.Meanwhile, brain damages have become heavier,In cyclosporin A-treated rats, brain damages were much less intense, proliferation and hypertrophy of astrocytes were significantly reduced also.[WT5HZ]Conclusion:Proliferation and hypertrophy of astrocytes were induced in chronic cerebral hypoperfusion, reactive astrocytes displayed a neuroprotected pattern,Cyclosporin A suppressed activation of astrocytes by reduced brain damages after chronic cerebral hypoperfusion.
