Urbanization Style and the Pattern of Economic Development:Also on the Direction of Urbanization

Over the last twenty years,China's rapid urbanization process not only leads to the miracle of economic development,but also produces negative impacts on the inequality of income distribution,environmental issues.This paper discusses some elements why economic development in China encounters so many obstacles from the view of urbanization,which is one of the most important factors promoting economic growth.We find that China's special urbanization style,which focuses mainly on land expansion,has the intrinsic linkage with the difficulties of changing the development pattern as well as the transformation of local governments' functions.We suggest that urbanization in the future should consider the basic condition that we are still at the low end of industrial chain and migrant wages only accounts for half of the rural household income.Meanwhile,local government should exit the land market and turn to the strategy of population urbanization.It should slow down the integration of urban and rural land markets when being short of sufficient supply of public,low-rent houses and urban job's creation.
