Abstract
The following three new species of Xylotini (Diptera, Syrphidae) are found from Qinling-Mountain Area, Shaanxi Provinec, China: Brachypalpoides nigrabdomenis sp. nov., Xylota cupripurpura sp. nov. and Xylota honghe sp. nov. The descriptions and figures are given. Type specimens are kept in Shaanxi Bioresource Key Laboratory, Shaanxi Technology University Hanzhong.Brachypalpoides nigrabdomenis sp. nov. (Figs. 1-7) Male. Head slightly broader than thorax in width. Vertex shining black, covered with yellow long hairs. Frons shining black, covered with white tomentum basally and laterally. Face black, covered with white tomentum, with a row of white short hairs along the eye-margin. Frontal prominence developed. Face with a deep emargination below frontal prominence. Frontal margin of oral opening prominently forwar- ded. Arista long and bare. Mesonotun with a pair of middle gray stripes indistinctly. Leg black. Hind femur slightly thickened, with black seta ventrally along the outer side in full length and the basal half part of inner side. Hind femur with thick black spines on the both sides of the ventral end. The hind tibia without spines on basal ventral carina. Abdomen black and narrower than thorax, 1.5 times in length as head and thorax together. The second tergite is the longest and the fourth the shortest (except for the first tergite). Male genitalia as showed in Figs. 4-7. Female: unknown. ♂ Length: body 13mm, wing 11.5mm. Holotype ♂, Huoditang (1400m,33°28′ N, 108°25′ E), Ningshan County, Shaanxi Province, China, 10 July 2003, collected by HUO Ke-Ke. The new species is similar to Brachypalpoides makiana (Shiraki), but differs in the legs black and hind femur slightly thickened. The new species is also similar to Brachypalpoides lenta (Meigen), but the latter species with abdomen mostly reddish, only the first tergite and the base of second tergite black, hind femur thickened. Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin nigr- (black) plus abdomenis (abdominal), in reference to the color of the abdomen. Xylota cupripurpura sp. nov. (Figs. 8-11) Male. Head indistinctly broader than thorax in width. Vertex shining black, covered with light yellow hairs. Frons black, densely covered with white tomentum, scattered basally with white short hairs along with eye-margin. There is a pair of triangular white pollen patches on the sides of the middle part of the frons in female. Face covered with white tomentum, with a deep emargination below frontal prominence. Frontal margin of oral opening is prominent forward. Mesonotum is black, with purplish cupreous tinge. Legs black, fore and middle legs with tibiae and 3 basal tarsites brown, tibiae with a dark ring in the middle. The trochanter of hind leg has a short spiny process. Hind femur is about 5 times in length as maximum in width, about two third part of apical end sparsely with black short seta ventrally, about a third part of apical end with spinous ridge ventrallay on the both sides, and inner ridge developed than the outer. Abdomen is black, with purplish cupreous tinge. The second tergite is the longest, and the third tergite is longer than the fourth. Male genitalia showed as in Figs. 8-11. ♂ Length: body 13mm, wing 11mm. Holotype ♂,Red-river Hollow (1000m; 34°04′ N, 107°45′ E), Mei County, Shaanxi Province, China, 1 Sep. 2002, collected by HUO Ke-Ke. Paratypes: 1♀, Baoji, Shaanxi Province, China, 23 July 2003, collected by HUO Ke-Ke ; 1♂, Nanwutai, Chang′an County, Shaanxi Province, collected by HUO Ke-Ke. The new species is similar to Xylota taibaishanensis He, but differs in the wings transparent, without brown spot beloew stigma, and the different genitalia. Etymology. The specific name is derived from the Latin cupr-(cupreous) plus purpura (purpureous), in reference to the color of the body. Xylota honghe sp. nov. (Figs. 12-16) Male. Head indistinctly broader than thorax. Vertex shining black, covered with light brown hairs. Frons dark brown, covered basally with short white hairs and tomentum along with eye
