Expression of heparanase in cervical cancer and its correlation with metastasis and prognosis

Abstract

Purpose To study the protein expression of heparanase in cervical invasive cancer and the relationship between heparanase expression, angiogenesis, metastasis and prognosis. Methods Immunohistochemical staining (SP method) was used to examine the expression of heparanase and CD34 in 60 cases of cervical invasive cancer and 13 normal cervical specimens. The relationship between the clinicopathological features, angiogenesis and prognosis was analyzed by χ2 test and t test . Overall survival rate of patients was analyzed by the method of Kaplan-Meier and Log-rank test. Results Heparanase was highly expressed in cervical invasive cancer tissues while all normal cervical tissues was negative (P=0.000). Expression of heparanase was high positively correlated with FIGO stage, lymphatic metastasis and MVD (P0.01),and negatively correlated with prognosis (P=0.017). Conclusions Heparanase may participate in the invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis of cervical cancer, and can serve as an indicator of aggressive potential and poor prognosis in cervical cancer.
