Abstract

Glucagon-like peptide-2(GLP-2)is a polypeptide hormone produced and secreted from enteroendocrine L-cells,which can specifically promotes the growth of intestinal mucosa and enhances epithelial repair in the setting of gut injury. The biological actions of GLP-2 are transduced by the GLP-2 receptor(a member of G-protein-coupled receptors),which significantly enhances the surface area of the mucosal epithelium via stimulation of crypt cell proliferation and inhibition of apoptosis in the enterocyte,GLP-2 also enhances nutrient absorption and barrier function of gut epithelium,as well as maintains the succession and integrity of intestinal mucosa. The properties of GLP-2 above suggest that it has therapeutic potential for the treatment of human disorders especially intestinal diseases. This review is focused on the biologic activity and gut protection of GLP2.
