Abstract

Synergistic effect of tungstate and benzotriazole (BTA) on corrosion inhibition of carbon steel was studied by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique and surface analysis. The results indicated that both tungstate and BTA could inhibit corrosion of carbon steel in pH9.0 solutions containing 5×10 -3 mol/L Cl -, and the inhibition efficiency of tungstate was higher than that of BTA. It had been found that there was a synergistic effect between tungstate and BTA for corrosion of carbon steel. Rising the pH value of solution and lowering the concentration of Cl - would enhance the efficiency of the binary inhibitor. The results of surface analysis indicated that the protecting film formed in the binary inhibitor was probably composed of products of WO 2- 4 Fe 3+ and BTA - Fe 2+ .
