Comparison of Veniafaxine and Alprazolam in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder

Abstract

OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy and safety of Venlafaxine and Alprazolam in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder. METHODS 50 patients met the criteria of CCMD- 3 for generalized anxiety disorder but without concomitant major depressive disorder were randomly sorted as Venlafaxine group and Alprazolam group and treated for 12 weeks. The efficacy and safety were evaluated with HAMA and TESS respectively. RESULTS Venlafaxine was as effective as Alprazolam without severe side effects and dependence. CONCLUSION Venlafaxine is an effective,safe,and well- tolerated anxiolytic agent in patients with generalized anxiety disorder.
