Relevance Theory and the Translation of Personal Pronouns in Chinese Poems into English

While implicated personal pronouns are fairly frequent in Chinese poems,pronouns in English language should be explicated.As a result,the translation of personal pronouns in Chinese poems is one of the diffculties a translator should pay special attention to.Personal pronouns are classified into explicated personal pronouns and implicated personal pronouns.The Relevance Theory is adopted in this paper for analyzing the cognitive process in which translators translate personal pronouns in Chinese poems.The result shows that explicated personal pronouns in Chinese poems are translated chiefly by applying code model,while implicated personal pronouns by applying inferential model in an effort to obtain the optimal relevance,i.e.,to figure out the specific personal pronouns.
