Abstract

Objective To study the status and affecting factors of psychological anxiety and depression in field army soldiers. Methods 833 male soldiers were tested by self rating anxiety scale (SAS), self rating depression scale (SDS), Eysenck personality questionnaire (EPQ) and interrelated factors questionnaire. Results ①The scores of SAS and SDS of the soldiers were significantly higher than that of norm ( P 0 001); 76 9% of the soldiers had no anxiety feeling, 20 2% of soldiers had slight anxiety feeling and 2 9% of them had middle and serious anxiety feeling, 58 5% of the soldiers had no depression feeling, 31 9% of the soldiers had slight depression feeling and 9 6% of the soldiers had middle and serious depression feeling. ②SAS and SDS scores were correlated positively with the scores of neuroticism and psychoticism subscales ( P 0 01), and correlated negatively with EPQ L( P 0 01); SAS and SDS scores also correlated significantly with interpersonal relation, rest time, climate adaptation, recreational activities, diet, understanding of training, numbers of brothers and condition of honor. ③The results of stepwise analysis showed that factors affecting anxiety were interpersonal relation, unstable mood, pathological characteristic, understanding of training and recreational activities. Factors affecting depression were interpersonal relation, EPQ P, EPQ N and condition of honor. Conclusion 23% of the soldiers had anxiety feeling and 42% had depression feeling. Personality and interpersonal relation were the main factors inducing negative feeling.
