Abstract
Objective To investigate the treatment of peripheral facial nerve paralysis as well as the factors affecting the curative effect.Methods Clinical data of 61 cases suffering from peripheral facial nerve paralysis was analyzed retrospectively.Of all the 61 cases,facial paralysis was caused by Hunt's syndrome in 14 cases,Bell's palsy in 5,suppurative otitis media in 19,temporal bone fracture in 11,and neoplasms of the temporal bone in 12 cases.Among them,24 cases were conservatively treated and 37 were surgically treated.Of the 37 cases surgically treated,3 cases received simple diseased tissue eradication of middle ear and mastoid process,27 received facial nerve decompression,2 received facial nerve excision,1 received end-to-end facial nerve anastomosis;the facial nerve defects in 4 cases were repaired using greater auricular or sural nerve graft.House-Brackmann facial nerve grading system was employed for estimating facial nerve function.All data were analyzed with Rank sum test.Results The follow-up time ranged from 6 months to 24 months.The facial nerve function resumed satisfactorily with statistical significance(P0.05) after treatment except those caused by neoplasms of the temporal bone.Conclusion Early and active conservative treatment,intensive and timely surgery are efficient ways for peripheral facial nerve paralysis.
