Abstract

Objective To evaluate the safety and efficacy of photoselective vaporization of prostate(PVP)for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH).Methods A total of 65 patients with symptomatic bladder outlet obstruction due to BPH underwent PVP via transurethral approach with un-contact laser system of American Lasercope Company. The therapeutic results were assessed using following variables:blood loss, operative time, indwelling time, mean IPSS,QOL and Qmax. Results All patients had minimal(≤30ml)or no blood loss. The mean operative time ranged 15 to 85 min(28.8±12.6 min). The mean catheterization time ranged 2 to 12d(4.2±1.8 d).All cases were followed up for 2 months after treatment.IPSS decreased to(6.2±1.82)scores from(25.8±2.9)scores,QOL decreased to(1.78±0.64)scores from(4.7±2.4)scores,and Qmax increased to(18.8±3.2)ml/s from(6.7±1.82)ml/s,respectively,which showed significant improvement, compared with those before operation(P 0.05).No patients of the 65 cases required blood transfusion,no patients had water intoxication or incontinentia urinae.Postoperatively,18 cases had uroclynia,12 cases had anal region ache,1 case experienced delayed hematuria,3 cases had transient dysuria, and 13 cases had infection of urinay tract. Conclusions The PVP has good safety and minimal invasion. It is the excellent treatment modality for BPH.It has the advantage of minimal blood loss, rapid rehability and minimal complications, especially for those at advanced age and at high risk.
