Abstract
AIM: To investigate the relationship of the levels of serum matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-2 (TIMP-2) with hepatic fibrosis degree in patients with chronic hepatitis B. METHODS: Serum levels of MMP-2 and TIMP-2 were measured by ELISA in 60 patients with chronic hepatitis C and 20 healthy controls. RESULTS: The serum MMP-2 and TIMP-2 levels were significantly increased in severe chronic hepatitis B, but not in mild and moderate chronic hepatitis B. There was no significant difference in the serum MMP-2 and TIMP-2 levels between the patients with mild and moderate chronic hepatitis. The levels of serum MMP-2 and TIMP-2 showed a positive correlation with the degree of hepatic fibrosis (r=0.851, 0.623, P0.01). CONCLUSION: Serum MMP-2 and TIMP-2 levels are significantly increased in chronic hepatitis B and have a good correlation with hepatic fibrosis.
