On the Pioneering Contribution of Poems with Paintings in the Tang Dynasty to the Stylistic Rules and Layout

It was in the Tang Dynasty that the combination of poems and paintings made significant progress,which was demonstrated by the poems with paintings in the dynasty.Occupying an important position in the history of Chinese poetry and the history of Chinese paintings,poems with paintings in the Tang Dynasty created and regulated the basic stylistic rules and layout and made poems with paintings a special type of poem.Their pioneering contribution mainly includes three aspects.Firstly,the range of poem style was widened,and not limited in the poem with lines of four or five characters each.Secondly,poets in the Tang Dynasty started to inscribe poems on their own paintings or on others'.Thirdly,many painting-commenting techniques were created.Three poets,Du Fu,Bai Juyi and Liu Shang,set three distinctive models for the followers of poems with paintings.In a word,poems with paintings in the Tang Dynasty exert a far-reaching influence upon the development of pomes with paintings and Chinese intellectual paintings.
