On the Narrative Characteristics of the Condemning Novels of the Late Qing Dynasty

Abstract

The condemning novels of the late Qing Dynasty formed distinct narrative characteristics in the development of its own.In terms of narrative structure,flashback or quasi flashback is adopted,and the power of narrative text is strengthened.In terms of narrative elements,news and cable are added,and the narrative force is expanded.As to the specialty of character setup,one of the features is that the image of foreigners come to dominate the narrative center in the narrative unit,the other is that there appear in the text a lot of other images of translators and diplomats dealing with foreigners.The change of descriptive method is mainly manifested in the adoption of the commonly-used psychological description,by which the character is even more vividly depicted.The writers of such condemning novels with their artistic experiments did a special contribution to the modernization of Chinese novels.
