Abstract

Objective: To study the changes of interleukin-1β(IL-1β) and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) both in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum in children with Japanese encephalitis and the clinical significance of the changes.Methods: Fifty cases of children with Japanese encephalitis were observed,which were divided into three groups according to Glasgow score: normal group (17 cases),general group (20 cases) and severe group (13 cases).IL-1β and NSE were detected both in CSF and serum in the very and recovery period in 50 cases,and at the same time 20 cases of children without central nervous system disease were selected as control.IL-1β was determined with enzymelinked immunosorbent assay (ELISA),NSE was determined with electrochemiluminescence.Results: The levels of IL-1β and NSE in CSF and serum in children with Japanese encephalitis in very and recovery period were both significantly higher than those of the control (P 0.01),and the degree was parallel to the severity of the disease (P 0.01).The levels of IL-1β in CSF and serum were positively correlated (P 0.01),so were the levels of NSE in CSF and serum (P 0.01).Simultaneously,the levels of IL-1β and NSE in CSF were positively correlated (P 0.01),so were the levels in serum (P 0.01).Conclusion: To detect the IL-1β and NSE in CSF and serum is helpful for our judgement of the degree of children’brain injured and assessment of clinical condition of children with Japanese encephalitis.
