Abstract
Objective To discuss the trans epidural microsurgical treatment of 18 cases with tumor in cavernous sinus. Methods A retrospective review of the clinical material preoperative CT and MRI features, operative techniques, result of operation and postoperative complications of 18 cases with tumor in cavernous sinus which was treated via epidural approach during 1994 to 1998 was done. Results Total resection of the tumor was achieved in all cases, no patient died in this series. 45 percent of cranid nerves (CNs) deficit was improved, 45 percent of CNs symptoums did not change, and 10 percent of CNs palsies worsened. 11 percent of patients had new CNs deficit after operation. There was no recurrence of tumors during the follow up period of 2 to 48 months(average 24 months). Conclusions The tumors in cavernous sinus can be totally resected by epidural approach alone. Understanding of the microanatomy about this approach can greatly reduce postoperative morbidity of patients.
