Effects of sedation on fentanyl-induced cough during anesthesia induction

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the effects of sedation on fentanyl-induced cough during anesthesia induction.Methods: One hundred and twenty ASA ⅠorⅡ patients,undergoing elective gynecological operations under general anesthesia,were randomly divided into 2 groups(n=60 each):control group and midazolam sedation group.Sedation group received iv injection of midazolam at 4 mg/kg initially and gradually increasing at 1 mg/kg per time until modified OAA/S scored 3.Results: The incidence of cough in control group and sedation group were 75%(45/60) and 70%(42/60)respectively and there was no significant difference(P0.05).There was no significant difference in the degree of cough between the two groups(P0.05).Conclusion: Sedation when modified OAA/S scored 3 has no effects on fentanyl-induced cough during anesthesia induction.
