Abstract

[Objective] To detect the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) mRNA in nasal polyps to investigate the mechanism of inflammation in the nasal polyps. [Methods] Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method was used to determine cyclooxygenase-2 mRNA expression in 35 nasal polyps and inferior turbinates (23 normal controlled group). [Results] COX-2 expression is remarkably upregulated in nasal polyps compared to normal controlled group. [Conclusions] The results showed that nasal polyp was a chronic reactive inflammatory disease on which prostaglandins play an important role.
