Abstract
This article is a new interpretation of Bai Lu Yuan's connotation and tragedy aesthetics in terms of the following relationships: social tragedy and modern man's rebellion,tragedy of character and the limitations of personality ideal,the role of tragic fate and freedom of will in the actualization of life.In the meantime,it identifies the relevance of this tragic sense in the novel to Mao Dun Literature Prize and to contemporary Chinese literature at large.
