Abstract
Objective To investigate the expression of SMO mRNA in human pancreatic carcinoma and explore its relationship with differentiation degree. size, invasion and metastasis of human pancreatic carcinoma. Methods In 28 samples of pancreatic carcinoma tissue and 28 samples of adjacent normal pancreatic tissue, SMO mRNA expression was detected by RT-PCR. Results Positive SMO mRNA expression was confirmed by RT-PCR in 20 of the 28 pancreatic carcinoma samples (71. 4%,20/28), while no positive SMO mRNA expression was detected in the 28 samples of adjacent normal pancreatic tissue. SMO mRNA expression was significantly correlated with the differentiation degree of pancreatic carcinoma (P 0. 05). but had no relationship with tumor size, invasion and metastasis (P 0. 05). Conclusions Detection of SMO mRNA expression has diagnostic implication, and strong SMO mRNA expression in pancreatic cancer might be used as a parameter for determining the degree of malignancy.
