Abstract
From early 1860s to 1890s,a temporary harmonious situation showed up,in which China and foreign countries fostered bilateral relations between states.But some enlightened people in the ruling circle of the Qing government had some far-reaching ideas otherwise.They took a series of measures of Self-Improvement Seeking Wealth to defend the feudalist ruling of the Qing government.Although this movement was aimed at ridding internal and external troubles,thus to defend the feudalist ruling,it was also the necessary result of social development of Chinese productivity,urged the formation and development of Chinese national capitalism,to acertain extent boycotted foreign capitalistic economy importing,and promoted the modern ization of Chinese education and of national defense.
