On the State Nature of Shang Dynasty

Abstract

This paper explores the government form of Shang Dynasty and analyzes the words bi and multi-kings, which occurred in the oracle bone inscriptions. The author denies the viewpoint that Shang Dynasty was a confederation of city-states. Based on the analysis of the power and obligations between the king and the seigneurs, the sameness of Shang culture in different areas, and the recognition that Shang Dynasty ruled the whole world, the author concludes that Shang Dynasty was a centralized state.
