Pragmatic Functions of Indirect Speech Act

Abstract

This paper starts from introducing the origins of Indirect Speech Act Theory and Searle's development on Austin's Speech Act Theory, and then clarifies the meaning and classification of Indirect Speech Act. At last, it analyses the functions of Indirect Speech Act in detail from a pragmatic point of view on five aspects which are politely declination, criticism, emphasis, politeness and requests.
