Trabeculectomy with mitomycin C in the treatment of post-traumatic angle-recession glaucoma

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of trabeculectomy with intraoperative application of mitomycin C in patients with post-traumatic angle-recession glaucoma. Methods The procedure was performed on 22 eyes(22 patients) with post-traumatic angle-recession glaucoma. The intraocular pressure and visual acuity were measured postoperatively. The success of this technique was analysed by using a Kaplan-Meier cumulative survival curve. Results Successful IOP control was defined as 6-21 mmHg, with or without any topical antiglaucoma medications and without further glaucoma surgery or servere complications. The 6-,12- and 18-month life-table success rates were 86.36% (n=22 ),78.57%(n=14) and 66.67%(n=6) respectively. Visual acuity was stable in eleven of 17 eyes(77.27%) and slightly improved in 5 eyes(22.73%).Complications were flat anterior chamber 6 eyes, thin filtering blebs 3 eyes,hypotony 1 eye, and cataract 1 eye. Conclusions Trabeculectomy with MMC may be useful in the management of post-traumatic angle-recession glaucoma. Good intraocular pressure control and preservation of vision can be expected in most patients.
