Abstract

Objective To evaluate the clinic efficacy and safety of telmisartan and valsartan on mild-to-moderate essential hypertension. Methods One hundred and thirty-two patients with essential hypertension were randomly divided into telmisartan group (65 patients) and valsartan group(67 patients). In the evaluation period of 8 weeks, every patient in telmisartan group took 80 mg telmisartan and the patients in valsartan group took 80mg valsartan every morning. 24 h dynamic pressure monitors conducted before and after treatment respectively. The routine blood test, routine urine test, the serum level of potassium, liver function, renal function and ECG were measured before and after the trial. Results Compared with pretreatment, mean blood pressures of 24 h,daytime and night fell significantly in both two group than those after treatment (P0.01); the mean blood pressure of 24 h and in night in telmisartan group fell more significantly than that of control group (P0.01). The routine blood test, routine urine test, the serum level of potassium, liver function, renal function and ECG had no obvious difference before and after the trial. Conclusions Telmisartan can be used effectively and safety as anti-hypertensive medication for patiens with mild-to-moderate essential hypertension.
