Abstract

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a tool designed to use computer system to efficiently capture, store, update, manipulate, analyze and display all forms of geographically referenced information. During about 30 years of its developing process, its function becomes stronger and stronger. As not only a powerful technology but also a kind of spatial information science, GIS has been widely used in many fields, and its development appears some new features: 4D GIS; convergence of GIS and CAD; 3S(GIS, GPS and RS) integration; combined with Expert System; Virtual GIS; OpenGL GIS. All above mentioned developing trends of GIS were reviewed in this paper, and the concept, principle, and mainly uses of GIS were also introduced concisely.
