Abstract
Objective To investigate the incidence of microcytosis and its causes. Methods 2033 normal people received 7 parameter analysis of red blood cells by CELL-DYN1700 blood analyzer. When MCV were less than 82 fl,further studies were performed including sera iron, iron saturation, hemoglobin electrophoresis and gene examination of thalasssemia. Results 163 cases of microcytosis were screened out in 2033 natural population, and the incidence was 8.02%,including 74 mild α-thalasssemia,23 mild β-thalasssemia,13 transient thalasssemia,2 hemoglobin H disease,4 abnormal hemoglobin carriers(1 case combined with β-thalasssemia),the incidence of thalasssemia was 5.71%(containing abnormal hemoglobin). There was no significan difference for incidence between male and female. The incidence of thalasssemia was apparently lower than that of Guangzhou, but higher than that of Taiwan.34 cases were detected with iron-deficiency microcytosis,7 cases male and 27 cases female among them, detecting rate was 0.44% and 6.20% respectively, and there was significant difference between male and female(P0.01).Several parameters(MCV79.6~81.8 fl)were normal in 13 cases of microcytosis, red blood parameters test found out that MCV decreased apparently in mild thalasssemia and RBC increased apparently. There was significant difference comparing with other types of microcytosis(P0.01).Conclusion The most common cause of microcytosis in natural population of Chaozhou areas is iron deficiency and thalasssemia, and microcytosis increasing is a highly sensitive parameter to screen mild thalasssemia.
