Effect of intense pulsed light on MMP-1 expression in rat skin

Abstract

Objective To observe the effect of intense pulsed light (IPL) on matrix-metalloproteases-1 (MMP-1) expression in rat skin and elucidate the biological mechanisms of photorejuvenation. Methods Fifteen SD rats were treated at three regions respectively with IPL. Treatment parameters were the same: 34J/cm~2 of the ffluence, triple pulses (4, 5, 6ms duration), 20ms and 25ms of pulse delays. At day 1, 3, 5, 7, 15, 30 after treatment, skin specimens were taken from treated areas and non-treated areas respectively. The expression of MMP-1 was investigated by means of immunohistochemistry. Results At treated regions, the expression of MMP-1 as positive in skin cells at day 1. With the time going, the expression got gradually stronger and reached highest at day 7. The expression became gradually weaker at day 15 and maintained weaker expression at day 30. The expression at non-treated areas, were negative. Conclusion IPL technology could enhance the expression of skin MMP-1, suggesting that MMP-1 plays a role in remodeling of skin in photorejuvenation.
