Abstract

Zhu Yao in his Genres of Ancient Fu first introduced the six artistic skills of Feng,Fu,Bi,Xing,Ya,and Song into Fu criticism and claimed that the means of artistic expression in ancient Fu are characterized by the combined use of Fu and Bi,and by involvement of emotion, literary grace and reason.Zhu Yao's theory on Fu,together with his theories of Fu ontology and development, constitutes his theory on ancient Fu.According to Zhu,emotion is the foundation, more important than reason, and reason is derived from language, and this literary theory is a summarization of the emotion-language theory of the Six Dynasties, and the emotion-reason theory and the language-reason theory of the Song Dynasty.Zhu launched a new trend for literary theories appearing since the Ming Dynasty and his theory thus has a very important position in the history of Chinese literary criticism.
