Abstract
Leaf and inflorescence free proline content of nine alfalfa (Medicago sativa) cultivars in the hill and valley region of the Loess Plateau in Gansu Province was determined. Results showed that under drought conditions, free proline accumulation was great; and related to water content, single plant dry matter weight, and drought resistance. Through proline content analysis, the drought-resistant alfalfa cultivar Ameristand-201 was sifted out as being the most suitable for the area.
