Abstract
The conflict of two different choices about the future of China between democracy and autarchy came to an end after the foundation of The People's Republic of China in 1949. However, from that time on, Taiwan issue began to become more and more important. In the mid-1950s, according to the changes of domestic and international situation, Mao Zedong put peaceful solution of Taiwan issue on his working schedule in time, and tried hard to promote a third round cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. But few contacts between Chinese Mainland and Taiwan were realized for Jiang Jieshi's resistance. On the other hand, Mao's proposal on peaceful unification of Taiwan contributed a lot to the policy of “one country, two systems.
