The idea of the service university is the integration of the three functions of the modern university,that is,teaching,research and social service.It emphasizes on the service function of the university,and this kind of service function is the dynamics of the overall operation of the university.The emergence of the service university is in close relation to the development of the modern society.The article offers strategies to the development of the application oriented institutes by analyzing the successful experiences of the domestic and overseas service universities.What we should do is to establish the mission to support the development of the local economy,to strength the adaptability of vocational education,and to construct the capacity-based education system.
