Abstract

P(DMDAAC-AM)(PDA) was prepared from dimethyldiallyammonium chloride(DMDAAC) and acrylamide(AM) by inverse emulsion polymerization with oil-soluble initiator. The process parameters were given as volume ratio of water to oil =1∶1.2, monomer mass ratio w(monomers)=33.3% and mole ratio n(DMDAAC)∶n(AM)=1∶9.Effect of amount of initiator on kinetics of the polymerization was studied. The result showed that good PDA could be prepared with 0.5 part initiator per hundred parts of monomer in weight. The viscosity characteristics of PDA in water were investigated. The reduced viscosity increased as the mass concentration of PDA solution decreased.Preliminary investigation on the application of PDA was also performed.
