Zhang Gao-yuan and the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895 --on Zhang Gao-yuan' behavior in the Chaochow Gulf in the Yellow Sea

In the Sino-Japanese War of 1894-1895,Zhang Gao-yuan was appointed to Liaodong battlefield.He fought bravely in the Gaiping Battle with great patriotism and got outstanding achievement although he was defeated at last.Zhang insisted on fighting back to the invading Japanese.Although he obeyed the order of Qing dynasty against his own will to surrender in the end,responsible for ceding territory in some sense,his achievements outweighed his errors as a member of group persisting in fighting back.Zhang should be regarded as a patriotic general in Chinese history.
