Abstract

The surface of polypropylene(PP) fiber was modified through grafting polymerization of butyl acrylate(BA) initiated by high energy ultraviolet(UV).The factors influenced the grafting degree of BA were discussed, such as the irradiation time, the concentration of monomer and photosensitizer. The original and grafted PP fibers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) spectrometer and the results indicated that butyl acrylate was grafted onto the surface of PP fibers. With the increase of grafting degree, the adsorption capacity of grafted fiber using diesel fuel as the adsorbate increased first and then decreased. When the grafting degree was 15.5% the maximum oil-absorption capacity reached 18.3g/g,while the oil-absorption capacity of PP fiber was only 11.5g/g.The adsorption rate for diesel oil was fast compared with acrylate resin.
