Abstract

The polypropylene(PP) non-woven is modified through grafting polymerization of butyl acrylate(BA),initiated by high energy ultraviolet(UV) in isopropanol/water mixture solution. The factors influenced the grafting degree such as the irradiation time, the monomer concentration, and the irradiation distance are discussed. The original and grafted PP non-wovens are characterized by Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) spectrometer and scanning electron microscopy(SEM).The oil sorption properties of original PP and butyl acrylate grafted non-woven(PPg-BA) are investigated by using diesel fuel as the adsorbate. It is found that the oil-sorption depends on the grafting degree of PP-g-BA.When the grafting degree is 11.42%,the maximum oil-sorption capacity reaches 12.55 g/g,which is about 1.65 times as high as that of original PP non-woven.
