Abstract

A field survey combined with research of documented records has demonstrated that there are 447 species of butterfly distributed in Chongqing and that they belong to 185 genera and 12 families, of which the family Nymphalidae has the largest number of species (128), followed in order by Satyridae (87), Hesperiidae (74), Lycaenidae (66), Papilionidae (36), Pieridae (32), Riodinidae (11), Danaidae (6), Amathusiidae (4),and Parnassiidae (1), and Acraeidae (1) and Libytheidae (1). The fauna composition of Chongqing butterflies is made up by Oriental species (64.9%), Palaearctic species (8.5%), common species of Oriental and Palaearctic (24.6%) and wide species (2.0%).
