Abstract
The reflection and refraction of a plane wave is studied at the interface of a medium with simultaneously positive permittivity and permeability and a medium of simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability. The two kinds of media are supposed to be homogeneous, lossless and isotropic in this paper. The analysis shows the propagation of the reflected and refracted waves in the two media and explains the negative refraction effect. The reflection and transmission coefficients are given also. The special cases of total reflection and total refraction are discussed finally.
