Abstract

A M6.0 earthquake occurred on 23 February 2001 in the western Sichuan Province, hina. The macro-seismic epicenter situated in the high mountain-narrow valley region between Yajian and Kangding counties, with a Ⅷ epicenter intensity.According to the investigation on the earthquake site, the areas of Ⅷ,Ⅶ and Ⅵ region are respectively 180,1472 and 3998 km 2.The distribution of isoseismic line is generally oval in shape with a long axis trending near NS direction. The earthquake destroyed many bulidings and produced some phenomena of ground destruction.Possibly, this event was resulted from long period activities of Litang fault and Yulogxi fault, two main faults in the western Sichuan. The movement of the main faults makes the crust stress adjust and concentrate, and finally release on the secondary fault in the block through the form of earthquake.
