Protective Effects of Edaravone on Sciatic Nerve in Rats with Experimental Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy

Abstract

Objective:To investigate the protective effects of edaravone on sciatic nerve in rats with experimental diabetic peripheral neuropathy.Methods: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy rats were induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin and divided into 2 groups randomly: control group and treated group.In the treated group,edaravone(3 mg/kg·d) was intraperitoneal injected for 4 weeks.Tailflick threshold temperature(TTT) was tested.Motor and sensory nerve conduction velocities(MCV and SCV) were measured.Morphology and the contents of NO and MDA,the activity of SOD in the sciatic nerve were detected.Results: In control group,increased TTT,decreased nerve conduction velocities,morphological abnormalities,increased contents of NO and MDA,decreased activity of SOD in the sciatic nerve were observed.Compared with the control group,the TTT was significantly decreased,the nerve conduction velocity was significantly increased,morphological abnormalities in sciatic nerve were improved,the contents of NO and MDA were significantly decreased,the activity of SOD was significantly increased in the treated group.Conclusion: Edaravone may lower diabetic sciatic nerve in rats with experimental diabetic peripheral neuropathy injury.
