Abstract

Objective To investigate the serotypes and drug resistance of Shigella isolated from adult patients with diarrhea in Xiaoshan,Zhejiang Province,so as to provide evidence for reasonable clinical treatment with antibiotics. Methods Biochemical identification, serotyping and drug susceptibility test were performed on the clinical isolates of Shigella strains, and a retrospective analysis was conducted with all of the data by WHONET 5.6 Software. Results Among the 125 strains of Shigella isolated,66(52.8%) strains were Shigella sonnei, and 58(46.4%) were Shigella flexneri. The resistance rate to ampicillin was the highest(95.9%),followed by trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole(TMP/SMZ) 79.8%,and Cefotaxime 48.6%.No resistant strains to cefoperazone/sulbactam,piperacillin/tazobactam,imineimipenem and meropenem were found. The resistance rates of Shigella flexneri to ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin were 87.0% and 57.1%,but none of the Shigella sonnei strains were detected as resistant fluoroquinolones. There were statistically significant differences between Shigella flexneri and Shigella sonnei in the resistance rates to piperacillin, ceftazidime, cefepime, cotrimoxazole and fluoroquinolones(P0.01).Conclusion The predominant strains causing adults Shigella infection were Shigella sonnei and Shigella flexneri in Xiaoshan District.Penicillin and TMP/SMZ are not suitable for clinical use,and enzyme inhibitors are the first choice for the treatment of Shigella infection.
