Regional Economic Development and Urbanization- An Empirical Study of Xiaoshan

Regional economic development and urbanization are the manifestations of China’s market-oriented reform.It is the main driving force behind China’s stable and sustainable economic growth.In the process of urbanization and regional economic development in China’s coastal cities,the market economy and scale effect of economic concentration promote economic growth,but it does not always bring about rural-urban and inter-regional coordinated development.Competition between and among a number of cities have led to environmental pollution,ecological degradation,social disintegration and social problems such as poverty.However,in China’s Yangtze River Delta where is well known as a region with well-developed private sector,regional economic development and urbanization process have presented a good posture of interaction,its experience is worthy of being summarized.This paper is to study the interaction of regional economic development and urbanization in Xiaoshan,summarize the successful experience in integrating regional economic development with urbanization,so as to set an example for other regions.
