Abstract

Everyday Use was published early in Alice Walker's writing career,appearing in her collection In Love and Trouble:Stories of Black Women in 1973.It narrates the conflicts between a black mother and her two daughters caused by two quilts in the family.This article studies tentatively the three female portraits and the symbols used in the story in order to show Alice Walker's concern about the black women's condition and their spirits as well as her effort to find a spiritual home for the black women and her identification with the black culture.
