"Poetic Novel" and the Return of Lyrical Tradition:Zhou Shoujuan's Fiction in the Journal of "Violet"

Abstract

In the early Republican era,with his sentimental novels,Zhou Shoujuan gained fame in the literary circle.In the following decades,he wrote nearly a hundred novels,ranging from love between man and woman to different facets of family and society,endowed with compassionate feelings.Paralleled with his translation works,his fiction,both in content and form,absorbs western romanticism,Victorian religious consciousness and Hollywood melodrama;like a kaleidoscope,reflects mirror stage of Shanghai,a place where all kinds of people live;and bears the author's characteristic popular style.In the aspect of language,Zhou combines both classical Chinese and vernaculars,inheriting Chinese lyrical tradition.This paper focuses on Zhou's romantic fiction published on the journal Violet in the late 1920s,and systematically analyzes the changes of his lyrical language in the modern world.
