Correlation between body mass index and fatty liver in the general population living in Shenzhen

Objective To study the characteristics and correlation between body mass index(BMI) and fatty liver in the general population living in Shenzhen.Methods Body weight,height,and the results of type-B ultrasonic examination from the volunteers participating this study between May 2009 and January 2010 were analyzed according to the year 2000 standard from WTO of the Western Pacific.Obesity was diagnosed according to the standard from year 2010 CDS.Results 8 884 volunteers(4 594 males,4 290 females,aged from 18 to 85 years old,mean age 40.2±13.3) were studied.The percentage of male and female subjects with overweight was 71.18% and 48.62%,respectively.The difference was significant(P0.05).2 732 subjects were found to have fatty liver,and the prevalence rate was 30.75%.The prevalence rate in the male and female subjects was 42.50% and 18.14%,respectively,and the difference was significant(P0.05).The occurrence of fatty liver was correlated with overweight and obesity.The BMI increased prevalence of fatty liver multiplied,the difference was statistically significant(P0.05).Conclusion There was a rapid increase in overweight,obesity and fatty liver in the young population living in Shenzhen.
